On 12 July 2014, an informal network of Cambodian and foreign scholars called Cambodian Strategic Study Group (CSSG) was formed to provide pragmatic, non-partisan and evidence-based policy solutions. In early 2015, the founders of the CSSG, Kung Phoak and Chheang Vannarith, strongly believed that Cambodia really needs a think tank that has the ability and resources to conduct research on a wide range of political, economic and regional issues, and more importantly, to represent Cambodia’s interests at regional and international level. Thus, the CSSG was later transformed into the Cambodian Institute for Strategic Studies.
