1. Why was the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation established?

The Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) was created to further promote regional cooperation and integration in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. The LMC was initiated by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in 2015 at the 17th China-ASEAN Summit and the first LMC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was convened the same year in Yunan Province where the concept paper on the framework cooperation and the joint press communiqué were issued.

The objectives of the LMC are to ensure the peace, stability, sustainable development and prosperity of the Mekong sub-region through forging collective leadership and enhancing mutual trust and understanding in addressing common economic, social and environmental challenges.

The LMC also stresses the principles of consensus, equality, mutual consultation and coordination, voluntarism, common contribution and shared benefits, and respect for the United Nations Charter and international laws.
